National Dog Day

Today is National Dog Day.
Here are our two Cairn Terriers.

First is Lizzie. She had her 11th birthday this month. She's a rescue dog, and has lived with us for almost 5 years. Her previous owner was a dog breeder and Lizzie had never been treated as a pet. She doesn't play with any dog toys, and wasn't accustomed to going for walks. Yes, she was trained as a show dog, but not walking around the neighborhood. The first week we had her, I noticed bloody paw prints on the sidewalk, her little paws were bleeding from walking around the neighborhood. I carried her home, and once she was recovered, we built up slowly, so she wouldn't have that problem again. Lizzie's nickname is "Killer". She's killed rabbits, birds and lizards, in our yard. When she's out for a walk she ignores all the "game" she encounters. Afterall, it's not in HER yard.

My favorite story about Lizzie is the day we brought her home. She came into the house from the garage, kind of looked things over, as she walked. She went into our bedroom, looked at Dudley's bed, by-passed it, went to her bed and got in. She didn't leave her little doggie bed, except to eat and go for walks for the first week. We don't think she ever had her own bed before, just a crate.

Lizzie always does her best to not have her picture taken, so this is her best shot.

Here's Dudley, he's a great dog, all boy. Dudley will be 9 in November, and we got him just over 5 years ago. Before he lived with us he was in the Marines, (he lived with a Marine and his family). When Dudley misbehaves, we threaten him with a court marshall, and he seems to understand. Dudley loves to play. His favorite toy is a tennis ball. He always has a few, but loves just one. He always knows where it is, and will decline any others, if you try to trick him. When he's ready to play, he finds his tennis ball and starts throwing at you. If you're not interested in playing, he keeps throwing it at you, because he's sure he can change your mind.

Dudley is fast. Our groomer, who also breed welsh corgi's, says Dudley is the fastest dog she's seen. When we travel Dudley and Lizzie stay at her kennel, and she plays with them daily.

Dudly is a ham, loves to have his photo taken.

Tomorrow

National Dog Day is tomorrow, August 26. I copied this collage from their website. I was thinking, why doesn't everyone post a photo or two of their dogs, tomorrow? No linking back, just celebrate your canine companion(s). Also, post this on your site, if you want to give others, who might want to do this, a heads up.

ABC Wednesday - Q

These are the two Quadrapeds that live at my house.

Lizzy is 10, and she is very quick.
Her nickname is Killer, because she's caught and killed
rabbits, mice, lizards and birds, all in our back yard.

This is Dudley, he's 8.
His nickname is Dud the Boy.
He is very sweet, and a cuddler.

Now, visit all the Q's at Mrs. Nesbitt's

Dudley and Lizzie, get haircuts

Dudley is a handsome boy. He's 8 years old.

Before her hair cut, Lizzie appears to have no eyes. Lizzie is 10 years old.

Dudley after his haircut, still handsome. He's fast, he runs like the wind.

Lizzie hates to have her photo taken, but here she is after being groomed. Doesn't look like the same dog, you can even see her eyes!

Whew

While I was working on the last post, Bob came into the office and announced there was a dead rat in my antique crock. I use the crock as a rain gauge. I may have to re-think that.

Looks more like a mouse to me. Our surrounding area is still semi-rural, so we have these type of visitors all the time. Since we recued Lizzie, we see less and less of unwanted guest.

Her nick-name is "Killer".

Warmed by the Fire

Well, the rain has stopped, temporarily. Now the excess water can soak-in or run-off before the next deluge on Sunday. Lately it's been feast or famine in the West in regards to rain. Last night it was chilly, for Southern California, in the mid-30's. So we had a fire in the fireplace. Until we moved to this, our retirement home, I'd never lived in a house with a fireplace. When we were looking at gated developments, having a fireplace was on top of my list of priorities.

Lizzie always runs when I attempt to take her picture indoors, probably because of the flash. Last night she didn't flinch at having her photo taken. I think she didn't want to give up her warm spot in front of the fire.

Dogs

These are our dogs, Dudley (top row) and Lizzie. They are both rescues, as were 9 of the 10 dogs we've had in our married life. We decided to get Cairn Terriers, again, because our favorite dog had been Mandy, a Cairn Terrier. Dudley came from a Marine family that gave him up when they relocated. When he's bad I threaten to court-martial him and he toes the mark. Lizzie's previous owner raised another breed for income and found Lizzie too rambunctious for her. Their loss, our gain. P.S. Lizzie's nick name is "Killer". Many a critter has gone to critter heaven thanks to her stealth. Rabbits, lizards, birds, mice, all gone.
